She was born Jan. 15, 1937, in Pequot Lakes, Minn., to Edward and Luella (Sletten) Schmidt. She graduated from Washington High School in 1955. Shirley retired from Sundstrand Aviation after 42 years of meritorious service. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and most of all spending time with her family and friends. She will be remembered most for the love she shared with her grandchildren, for her generosity, and kind heart. Survivors include her daughter, Gina Sciame (Paul Ruud); son, Ronald L. Gates Jr. (Deborah); grandchildren, Jordan, Tyler and Hunter Gates, of Rockford, Ill.; brothers, Russell "Bud," Dale and Darrell Schmidt; sisters, Delane McNamee, Sharon Carlson, Marion Heapy, Marlys DeJarnett and Linda Smith. Predeceased by parents, Edward and Luella; sisters, Bernice, Jean, Delores and Patricia; and brother, Richard.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, there will be a gravesite burial at Pequot Lakes Cemetery.
